Edith Head

Your dresses should be tight enough to show that you're a woman and loose enough to show that you're a lady. – Edith Head

Fashion is art; and no one proved that better than Edith Head.

Edith Head, born in 1897, was an American costume designer who worked primarily in film. Throughout her career, she won a record eight Academy Awards for Best Costume Design. She began her career with Paramount Pictures, in 1924, where despite a lack of any experience in art, design, or costume design, she managed to land a job as costume sketch artist. She worked for Paramount Pictures for 43 years until 1967, when she went to Universal Pictures, most likely following Alfred Hitchcock, who had made the move a few years earlier and for whom she had done extensive work.

She designed costumes for forty actresses and three actors, and worked on sixty-three movies (the last of which, amusingly, being the Steve Martin movie “Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid” in 1982.)

In my opinion, Edith Head is one of the most talented and artistic clothing designers of all time. Sadly, she passed away before she could design my own personal wardrobe; I try my best without her.
