May 8: Today in Art

Happy Birthday, Charles Frederick Naegele!

Charles Frederick Naegele was born in 1857 in Knoxville, Tennessee. He moved to Memphis at a young age, where he was apprenticed to a tombstone carver and made money painting signs. It was through his work painting that he met the painter Charles Myles Collier, who gave him painting lessons and ultimately sent him to study in New York with two other painters: William Sartain and William Merritt Chase.

Naegele began his career designing medals and painting portraits of extremely idealized women, glorifying motherhood and American beauty. Later in his career, he began to devote more of his time and talent to landscape paintings, however he is better known for his work in portraiture.

He died in 1944, in Marietta, Georgia.
